123rd Philippine Independence Day in Tunis Tunisia

Filipinos Celebrate First-ever Independence Day Event in Tunisia

Tunis, 19 June 2021 - The Philippine Embassy, together with the Philippine Consulate General in Tunis (Tunis PCG), led the activities in celebration of the 123rd anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence in Tunisia. This is the first time a Philippine Independence Day event was conducted in the country.

The Embassy, led by Chargé d’Affaires, e.p. Juan E. Dayang, Jr., and some members of the Filipino Community (FilCom) in Tunisia attended a Thanksgiving Mass at the St. Augustine and St. Fidelis Church of La Goulette.

After the mass, the Embassy and FilCom members, including Filipino-Tunisians, gathered for the “Fiesta in Tunisia” at the Philippine Consulate General’s office building in Les Berges du Lac.

CDA Dayang said that “today’s event is a historic one as it is the first time our kababayan in Tunisia will celebrate the Independence Day.” He thanked Tunis PCG led by Consul General, a.h. Sonia Ayed, and the FilCom members for organizing the event on their own.

During her welcome remarks, ConGen Ayed enjoined Filipinos to collaborate with the Embassy in its “efforts to raise the profile and enhance the image of the Philippines among Filipinos in Tunisia.”

Some FilCom members brought authentic Filipino dishes and some came to the event donning Filipiniana outfits. There were also cultural performances and games during the event.
